Because I Said I Would

One day my husband came home from a work trip and handed me an article he read on the plane. The article was about Alex Sheen and the non-profit organization Because I Said I Would. As I began reading the article, I knew why my husband wanted me to read it. The premise behind Because I Said I Would is to make a promise and keep it. The article was a reflection of how I live my life, both personally and professionally. Promises have no meaning if there is no action behind it and keeping it means getting it done no matter how long or how it is accomplished.

For me, when I make a promise I do my best to make sure it happens. Whether it is for my family, my friends, my church, or my patients, I always follow through. Often times it can be exhausting, but I think of the why and the motivation behind it. The motivation behind any action comes from within, from our experiences, our feelings, whether they are good or bad, positive or negative. The motivation exists, we just need to find it and make it the driving force to move forward.

When I took the dental hygiene oath, I said I would provide the best care to patients and help advance the profession. Becoming a part of my hygiene association allowed me to be a lifelong learner and play a role in making a difference in the dental community. As your 2018 - 2019 President, I am committed to you, my fellow hygienists. During the next year, my promise is to provide hygienists with the tools to enhance their patients’ lives, as well as, their own via a variety of continuing education courses.  SNDHA will be hosting courses that include laser certification, introduction to an implant hygiene study club, techniques on improving your overall health and well-being in the workplace, kicking the sugar blues, myofunctional therapy, and much more. I hope to see you at these courses and let’s make a promise together to make a difference for our community.
